Palm oasis, Coachella Valley Wildlife Refuge, last week. Deserts are infinitely subtle and fascinating and full of spectacular surprises, especially when the rare water supply meets the determination and resourcefulness in life manifesting itself.

On a personal note, I’ve been out walking in nature for the past 5 days in Joshua Tree, not overdoing it, but going between one or two miles at a stretch, sometimes twice daily, and scrambling up and down hills and rock formations – all without experiencing the labored breathing and tightness in my chest and light-headedness I would feel prior to my heart surgery.

Back to Joshua Tree and a quiet day in the park. Let the land heal …
